CRETE-TURE COMFORTS

Health officials on Crete ordered an investigation after the inspection of an operating room found a live scorpion. It came just a few weeks after a rat tail was found in a bowl of soup in another hospital.

LIKE DOOGIE HOWSER, BUT TERRIFYING

It would be shocking to learn that one of those doctors roaming the halls of a hospital was not fully trained and accredited, let alone a teenage dropout.

Frank Abagnale, who spun tales of his life as a teenage imposter into the book (and later movie) Catch Me If You Can, spent 11 months serving as chief resident pediatrician at a Georgia hospital. His job was primarily to supervise the interns—young doctors aspiring to be pediatricians (who were older than he was). When approached with a real medical question, Abagnale would defer to the interns, who took pride in the level of confidence Abagnale put in them.

Of course, Abagnale had no medical knowledge whatsoever and was also terrified by the sight of blood. He routinely made minor blunders, like walking into a nursery without washing his hands or putting on a mask. He claims it wasn’t until the end of his tenure that he realized the risks of his deception. A nurse ran to him warning they had a “blue baby.” Abagnale thought it was a joke and told her he had a green baby to deal with. It wasn’t until he consulted his medical dictionary that he learned the term meant a baby whose blood lacked oxygen. By the time he got to the room, one of his interns had already arrived, bailing him out again.
